Pulp Fiction tells several crime stories that are all connected, jumping around in time rather than being told from beginning to end.
It mainly follows two hitmen, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, who work for a gangster named Marsellus Wallace. They're sent to retrieve a mysterious glowing briefcase and deal with some young guys who tried to double-cross their boss. Jules has a spiritual awakening during the mission and starts thinking about leaving the life of crime, while Vincent continues on as usual.
Vincent is later asked to take Marsellus’s wife, Mia Wallace, out for a night of fun while Marsellus is out of town. Things take a dark turn when Mia overdoses on heroin, and Vincent has to save her life in a panic-filled scene.
Another major story follows Butch Coolidge, a boxer who was paid by Marsellus to lose a fight. But Butch decides to win the fight and run away with the money. He ends up killing Vincent in the process and later gets caught along with Marsellus by two violent criminals. Butch escapes and makes a surprising choice to go back and save Marsellus, earning his freedom in return.
Finally, the film begins and ends in a diner where a couple, Pumpkin and Honey Bunny, attempt to rob the place. Jules and Vincent happen to be there eating breakfast. Jules, now reflecting on his life and wanting to change, talks the robbers down and lets them go, deciding to walk away from crime for good.
In my own words
Pulp Fiction is one of my all-time favorite films from the Tarantino collection—just behind Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Kill Bill Vol. 1. Honestly, this is a movie you have to watch at least once in your life. It already has a solid place in film history.
The characters and the entire story are incredibly creative and fun. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched the world-famous dance scene where John Travolta and Uma Thurman give it their all. Every time that scene comes on, I get up and dance like Travolta—no shame! I love films. Good films. And that’s exactly what you’ll find on this blog—only the good stuff. So... don’t miss out, ok?
One of the coolest things about Pulp Fiction is how Tarantino tells multiple stories that all end up connecting in clever ways. It’s full of what you might call “canon events” that shape the characters’ lives, and I love that he even weaves in personal touches and references from his own life. And of course, he never misses when it comes to music. After watching this movie, I guarantee you’ll be adding a few new songs to your playlist.
And let’s not forget the cast—it’s absolutely stacked. You’ve got John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, and Ving Rhames all delivering unforgettable performances. Each actor brings something unique that makes every scene pop.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your popcorn and dive into this masterpiece of modern cinema.
Oh and fun fact: this was only Tarantino’s second film! Pretty wild what working in a video store and having great taste (and connections) can lead to.
