Story in a few words
Manchester by the Sea," directed by Kenneth Lonergan, is a deeply moving drama about grief, family, and redemption. Casey Affleck stars as Lee Chandler, a withdrawn handyman whose life is upended when he must return to his hometown after his brother's sudden death. Named guardian of his teenage nephew, Lee struggles with the weight of his past and the challenges of moving forward. His return also brings him face-to-face with his ex-wife, Randi (Michelle Williams), with whom he shares a painful history. Their encounters are raw and emotionally charged, reflecting the lingering wounds of their past and the difficulty of finding closure. The film’s powerful performances and emotional depth earned it critical acclaim, including multiple Academy Awards. It’s a poignant, beautifully crafted story of loss, love, and the complexities of human connection.
by IMDb and meIn my own words
I remember watching this film for the first time.
Just a few seconds in i already loved the film because during the credit scene at the beginning it is deeply moving and immediately establishes the film’s tone. I generally love the tone of the whole film. Jody Lee Lipes, the cinematographer, really did a great job, in my opinion, because throughout the entire film, I had the feeling that I was there with the characters. The filming style, as you can see in the pictures, sometimes gets really up close to the characters. The screenplay, overall, is very well written. It also shows that these kinds of events can happen to any family, which is what makes the film so impactful. The film does a great job balancing calm moments, emotional moments, and hectic moments. The soundtrack is also really well made and fits the film perfectly. It was also a great decision to include vocals and classical music, which make the film even more emotional.
Here's a little fun fact about the main character, played by Casey Affleck: Originally, Matt Damon was supposed to play the role of Lee Chandler, but because of the filming of The Martian, where Damon was playing the main character, he couldn’t make it on time. Instead, he co-produced the film with Kenneth Lonergan. For me, the film was really enjoyable to watch and emotionally impactful. Overall, it’s clear that a lot of talented people were behind this production. Even after watching it, the film still lingers in my mind, reminding me to enjoy life. I liked it so much that I’ve already watched it twice. Overall, it’s definitely worth a watch for everyone—even if you mostly love comedies, it still has moments of hope and fun. So, what are you waiting for? If you have Amazon Prime Video or the chance to rent or buy it, do it. This film really goes deep into your heart.
