Story in a few words

Death Proof is Quentin Tarantino's adrenaline-fueled homage to 1970s grindhouse cinema, packed with brutal action, sharp dialogue, and retro aesthetics. The film follows Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a charming yet psychotic driver who uses his heavily modified "death-proof" muscle car as a murder weapon to stalk and kill unsuspecting young women. Told in two distinct acts, the story shifts gears when Mike targets a new group of women—only to realize too late that they are not his typical victims. Led by real-life stuntwoman Zoë Bell, these fearless, tough-as-nails women turn the tables on him, leading to an exhilarating, high-speed showdown. With its blend of practical stunt work, extended tension-building conversations, and an electrifying final act, Death Proof stands as a unique, self-aware twist on the slasher and exploitation genres, showcasing Tarantino’s love for vintage cinema and high-octane revenge narratives.

In my own words

This film is a collaboration between Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, including a feature film by Rodriguez called Grindhouse, which shares the exact same filming style as this one. I’ll write about Grindhouse in next week's episode. Anyway, back to Death Proof—it was an interesting watch (in a good way) because it was completely different from what I expected. A few minutes in, I noticed the vintage look, which comes from it being filmed in Panavision (Film). It also gave me the feeling of watching a student film from someone's early years of film school—but that was entirely intentional, which made it even better.
Combined with the shooting style and the overall plot, it was a really fun experience. The film, in general, has an amateurish vibe, mixed with some of Tarantino’s signature violent flair. It really proves that even a fairly straightforward thriller script can be shot in a raw, unconventional style.
This film truly inspired me to create something in a similar direction—funny dialogues and bold violence. I highly recommend it to people who love this kind of style, but also to those looking for something fresh and different. Plus, Kurt Russell, who plays the stuntman, delivers a fantastic performance.
